Calf Correction

Calf correction, augmentation

Calf augmentation is a surgical procedure, where implants are used for correction of calf form. The aim of the plastic calf enlargement (augmentation) surgery is to make calves look more naturally and beautiful. Calf enlargement surgery is usually performed to enlarge small calves or to correct their form. Leg asymmetry can be corrected during the surgery. The scope of the surgery directly depends on the changes, desired by a patient. Calf correction and augmentation surgeries are mostly performed after certain diseases or injuries, in order to recover the proportion of calves. The surgery is also performed to improve the form of calves, e.g. for women, who want to look more attractive wearing clothes, which do not cover knees, and men, who want their legs look more muscular.

A patient, who is considering the possibility of calf augmentation surgery, should firstly consult with a plastic surgeon. A patient has to express frankly his/her expectations about a better appearance and self-feeling after surgery.

  • Tests: Just like before any surgery certain blood and urine tests have to be done.
  • Surgery: A plastic surgeon lifts calf tissues and skin through small incisions in order to make an empty place (“pocket”) under the tissues (according to the technique used by a plastic surgeon and the patient’s anatomy). A plastic surgeon inserts an implant into a “pocket”. The incisions are sutured. After the surgery a special surgical corset is put on a patient’s calves.
  • Duration of the surgery: 1-3 hours
  • Anaesthesia: The surgery is performed using general anaesthesia
  • Post-surgery period: You will be able to come back home on the other day after surgery or stay at the clinics for several days. Post-surgery pain can be easily relieved by medications. Usually, pain lasts one or two days. Sutures are removed in a few days after the surgery. A slight swelling of calves that may appear after the surgery vanishes soon, and calves regain their normal colour. The calf muscles may become tighter for several weeks or months. In certain cases, your doctor may recommend massages in order to soften them. Your calves may be insensitive for some time, however this phenomenon will disappear after a certain time.

Although you will recover in one or two days after surgery, but the doctor will advise you, how to return to ordinary routine. In order to ensure better healing, you should avoid excessive physical activity and strictly follow postoperative treatment. If calves heal-up fully, you will be able to return back to work and normal routine soon.
  • Complications: The aim of the plastic calf augmentation surgery is to make calves look more naturally and beautiful. If calves are healing differently, they may become different. Every year thousands of successful calf augmentation surgeries are done. Nevertheless, a patient should be aware of possible risks and complications of calf augmentation surgery. The possible risks and complications of calf augmentation surgery should be explained in detail to you by the plastic surgeon. There is a low possibility that your body will reject implants, that may result in necessity to remove the implants. In the event of leg injury, and sometimes due to unclear reasons, implant may be broken. In most cases, problems related to broken implants do not occur in the first ten years, and in the opinion of many practicing surgeons, problems related to broken implants occur after 17-20 years. In such cases, additional surgery is needed to remove the old implant or replace it by a new one. A cist may form, blood may accumulate, and deposits of calcium may form near the implant. Other complications, that have been explained by the doctor in as much detail as possible, may also appear. The risk of complications can be reduced by strict adherence to doctor’s instructions on post-surgery care.
  • Scars: Although a plastic surgeon will do his best to make the scars visible as less as possible, however they cannot be avoided. A scar always remains in the incision place. In most cases scars gradually vanish until they become barely noticeable.
  • Socially presentable: you will be able to return to your work in one week, however exercising and doing heavy works will be allowed in 4-6 weeks only. In addition you will be advised to wear a special corset for 4-6 weeks.
  • Important: Calf augmentation surgery can not be performed if you have an infection of viral or bacterial origin, autoimmune disease, during pregnancy, lactation period, and menstruation. Please remember that implant contours and a capsule formed around it may interfere with normal evaluation of radiogram, therefore it is necessary to notify the doctor about the implant prior to radiography procedure.
